The science is there in support of prayer. It doesn’t matter what God you want to pray to, Hell you can pray even if you are an Atheist. Pray to the Universe, to nature, just get your prays and Thanksgiving out verbally. It is like keeping a verbal Journal.
I am a follower of Christ so those are the examples I will use. Feel free to cut and paste whoever you pray to.
Benefits of Prayer
Below are 5 scientifically proven benefits of prayer according to an article by Clay Routledge, PHD from Psychology Today:
1. Prayer improves self-control
Studies have demonstrated that self-control is like a muscle,it gets fatigued. You can only do so many push-ups before your muscles give out. Similarly, activities that require self-control are fatiguing, making it more difficult to make good choices the more you have to use your “self-control muscle.” Think about it. You are more likely to lose your cool or engage in mindless eating when you are mentally exhausted.
Recent research indicates that prayer can help you get more out of your “self-control muscle.” Research participants who said a prayer prior to a mentally exhausting task were better able to exercise self-control following that task. In addition, other studies demonstrate the prayer reduces alcohol consumption, which may reflect the exercise of self-control. Findings such as these suggest that prayer has an energizing effect.
2. Prayer makes you nicer
Researchers found that having people pray for those in need reduced the amount of aggression they expressed following an anger-inducing experience. In other words, prayer helps you not lose your cool.
3. Prayer makes you more forgiving
Researchers found that having people pray for a romantic partner or friend made them more willing to forgive those individuals.
4. Prayer increases trust
Recent studies found that having people pray together with a close friend increased feelings of unity and trust. This finding is interesting because it suggests that praying with others can be an experience that brings people closer together. Social prayer may thus help build close relationships.
5. Prayer offsets the negative health effects of stress
Researchers found that people who prayed for others were less vulnerable to the negative physical health effects associated with financial stress. Also, it was the focus on others that seemed to be contributing to the stress-buffering effects of prayer. Praying for material gain did not counter the effects of stress. So thinking about the welfare of others may be a crucial component of receiving personal benefits from prayer.
Scientists and public intellectuals who are critical of religion, focus on what they believe to be the irrationality of religious belief. Why waste time believing in things that have no supporting scientific evidence? These critics typically fail to consider the fact that scientific studies are finding measureable benefits of religious faith. Religion is complicated. It can be both good and bad for your health depending on a number of variables. However, there is a growing body of evidence indicating that prayer, a behavior often associated with religion, can be beneficial for individuals and society.
When to Pray
You can pray anytime. There shouldn’t be a set time, you should be doing it all the time if you can. Below are some of my favorite times to pray.
Talk to God. Just carry on a conversation with Him like He is next to you. I use to back in High school would lay in my bed and just talk to Him like we were having a sleep over and he was in a sleeping bag on the floor next to me. Sometime it was more like I was on the couch of a psychiatrist talking through my problem. And a lot of the times answers would pop in my head. I knew that was God talking back. I also felt so great doing this, I was so happy. I never knew why I stopped having those conversations.
Another favorite is to get into nature and pray. I like to go for walks when the weather is nice and just spill my guts. I can be more focus and just feel the anxiety, depression, or any burdens being lifted into oblivion. Plus you get exercise so two birds.
How to Pray
God answers mans prayer by giving him increased revelation of truth, an enhanced appreciation of beauty, and an augmented concept of goodness. Prayer is a subjective gesture, but it contacts with mighty objective realities on the spiritual levels of human experience; it is a meaningful reach by the humans fir superhuman values. It is the most potent spiritual growth stimulus. We are always feeling let down because we think God doesn’t answer our prayers, maybe it is not the answer we are looking for, or what we think is best for us. We are giving what we need to make it in this world and facing diversity.
Words are irrelevant to prayer. They are merely the intellectual channel in which the river of spiritual supplication may chance to flow. God answers the soul’s attitude, not the words. It is what we are feeling in our heart, words are empty without the feeling behind it. We can repent and ask for forgiveness all we want, but if it is not in our soul or in our being, if we don’t mean it these words are empty and not taking seriously by God.
You must qualify as a potent prayer by sincerely and courageously facing the problems of universe reality. you must possess cosmic stamina
Always give Thanksgiving. Pray for what you are thankful for no matter how big or how small.
you must have honestly exhausted the human capacity for human adjustment. God wants you to grow as a human, and he wants you to try to correct your problem every way HUMANLY possible. He made you, He knows it is in you to prosper. He sees you trying, he will be more willing to help you.
you must surrender every wish of mind and every craving of the soul and body to transforming embrace spiritual growth. Erase materialism from your thoughts and desires to see clearly. Your Focus has to be on the unseen, your faith, to be pure.
you must take wholehearted choice of the divine will
you not only recognize the father’s will and choose to do it, but you have effective an unqualified consecration, and a dynamic dedication , to the actual doing of the Father’s will. Sometimes we might want to cherry pick answers God gives us, some of it might not be what we want to hear, but if you want help and want to obtain what you seek you need to take all of what God puts in front of you.
Your prayer will be directed exclusively for divine wisdom to solve the specific human problems encountered in the Paradise ascension – the attainment of divine perfection ( you will be perfect, as your father in heaven is perfect – Jesus quoted in the New Testament)
And you must have faith – living faith
